All these 3 art pieces are made in charcoal by students. Charcoal is a great versatile medium. It is fast, direct and great for larger format sketching. Charcoal is cheap and works well also on coloured paper, or pastel paper. The charcoal comes in different widths and can be broken in pieces to be easier to shade with. But a pack of charcoal sticks, which is usually found under 5 dollars. Do date your sketches to see how you evolve in your technique. Fix the charcoal with spray fix (look for the one with less smell but still spray outside) Try to hold the original in the same distance while spraying and leave it to dry for a few minutes. I have often thought about the color palettes that we chose and why we make those particular choices. Today a student chose to paint “Tumeric” and of course spices, food can also be a source as the landscape that surrounds us when growing up.  I love how she has paired the earthy tones with the pink. We had a great collage workshop at Studio Miu, next week it will be drawing perspective. One of my other students did a wonderful collage, her first and unfortunately I only got a blurry picture. Studio Miu has just moved in to Orchard Centerpoint, at first I was a bit sad because I really like Ngee Ann City because I could find art supplies, books and great coffee at the same location. But yesterday I saw the new studio, the space is large with four different rooms, great space for storage and washing. I will be happy to run my Monday classes, from the end of July I will start to run evening classes on Mondays as well so that you can join if you are working. Water color has a quality that no other medium quite posses. It is delicate transparent, and direct. In the same way it is quite difficult to direct. Used with dry or wet brush you can create very different effects and the paper plays an important part of the result. With watercolor good material is important. Soft brushes, great colors and a handmade paper are a good start. Watercolor is also very good for sketching and can be used together with black ink or acrylic. Today we did a “sketchwalk” at Arab Street. To me sketching is for an artist as stretching is for an athlete. Singapore has great scenes for sketching, but you can do it anywhere. It is easy, quick and requires simple materials. Cappucino at Fika Memories in the taxi on the way back. I saw a talented student draw George Clooney, and another made Audrey Hepburn in profile. The room was so filled with concentration that a few people forgot to breath, but a lot of great faces were drawn. We used pens, and charcoal. The picture posted above is from when a student had finished her first work and could play with the charcoal. That is when the magic happened as it sometimes does when you allow yourself to think less, measure less and just do. I think that anyone that has been working with something creative will agree that there are days when you tools, imagination and skill work together and then you have other days. It is equally true that in between the magic we need to do a lot of drawings, paintings or whatever we are pursuing. Practice and experimenting can not be neglected. If you have the privilege to be in a creative group or classroom you also learn a lot from each other. I was happy to hear that my students whom worked hard where pleased with all the hard work and experimenting that I pushed them to do. I had a lot of fun and I felt happy walking out of Studio Miu today.
