At the last class I challenged my students. They had a card on their place deciding which bag they would get. To create their art piece they could only use what was in the bag. The aim was for them to use new tools, and challenge their limitations in creating. I was amazed to the results they had. Each one found a new texture, or a new tool. The cards to make your choice. Thick acrylic and a straw, the effect is bold and beautiful. An unfinished, but gorgeous piece, painted party with a feather. Straw and ink, the effect is like delicate branches. Acrylic and ink in a magical net. Thank you ladies for going on a creative adventure, and pushing yourself to paint with new tools and experimenting. This is one way to find new themes and new textures that you would want to use in your projects. Bugs can have the most amazing color palette, shapes and forms. It was much more fun to sketch than I knew. To have a bug workshop was on a request from a student, and on Monday it is finally time. This drawing is done with black ink and dry pastel, and it is done lose in a sketch format. Next Monday on the 12th of May, you can join a bug and butterfly workshop at Studio Miu. 10 -12.30, cost 80 SGD including materials. Art Stage Singapore was an adventure in contemporary art. A wide variety of styles and artists, but what surprised me most was that the show had quite a few pencil works. It was amazing to see so much art and expression in one exhibition, but it is hard to cover it all in one day. After hours of wandering you get to a point where your eyes are filled and you cannot take in more expressions. Amongst the exhibiting artists I was also struck by the talent of a young French artist Levalet that does a lot of graffiti styled paintings on walls, and a Korean artist Seung Hyo Jang with collages among others. I also meet The Red Pencil that does important work with art therapy for children that has been or are going through hard times or traumas. Like the Yangdaora Project for children from Fukushima. This morning I just constructed very simple notebooks for our sketching tour to Divine Winebar. I just love the texture and color of my new favorite drawing paper and it just didn’t come in the proper size for sketching so I cut, folded and put a ribbon in the middle and knotted. Very simple but effective as I learnt from artist Barbara Ariss Stroh Wasser. It is also easy if you want to frame the sketches later, it is just to untie the ribbon and they are loose pages. Charcoal is to me one of the best medias when it comes to capturing a facial expression. Above you see 3 drawings. The first and the last are done by AnneMarie, and they in very simple lines capture the essence. The middle drawing is by Inger and is filled of lines, using the all the tones from darkest black to white. This is a great way to practice drawing. If you forgot to buy fixative to make the charcoal last you can use your hairspray. A day at Brisbanes art museums was amazing. It is one of the best art museums that I have visited and it did give a good  picture of the Australian art history. The museum also has a good store with art books.
