  • Asian and Nordic fusion with a focus on Pop-Art

I started at the beginning looking at Warhol and the first mission was to paint a can or a packet in your own style. You quickly realize that Pop-Art might look easy but it is a style where every line is very visible so it takes time, effort and layers. However it can also be fun and the result of something simple as a can of food can become an interesting art piece. They will be continued on next Monday…. #ArtclassinSingapore #Popart #Chinatown #artpiece #Asianart #fun #Singapore #interestingart #Warhol #inspiration

  • Grateful for the opportunity to be greeted with so many smiles

Today I went to one of the orphanages in Johor, with my friends Lene and Asbjorn. As soon as we drove inside the gates we could see the children waiting with big smiles. We had more smiles for 3 hours, while we painted, draw and had fun. I don’t know how many rabbits, dogs, Christmas trees and horses that I did, but it was quite a few. I enjoyed every single one, and it was great to see the enthusiasm in the drawing session. By that time some of the guys played soccer in the garden. It was wonderful to see how they all treated each other as siblings, which would mean that you had 24 sisters and brothers. A great place to visit and they do need more contact with grownups. It was easy to go and hard to leave, but I am grateful that I had the opportunity to meet these wonderful kids.

  • Art road trip summary

Just back from Australia an the art road trip in Queensland with Julia Namour at Connector Jewels. The picture above shows her work at the collage workshop in Goombungee. We travelled through Mount Tamborine, Forest Hill, Towoomba, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Goombungee, Brisande and the Sunshine Coast. I learnt that tea at the hotel actually is dinner at a pub. That most words can be shortened and that humor is the best way to tackle any project. This sketch is from a sketchdrop. That was something that we did throughout the trip, the picture above is from Lift bakery and cafe in Brisbane. A sketchdrop is basically a quick sketch on location that is left with a card from the artist. I know that another sketch was picked up by the owner of a café in Forest Hill. A nice place to stop by at. We did try great pastries during the trip. At one time, however part of my lunched was snatched by a kookaburra. I was lucky enough to see one Koala in Goombungee thanks to Glynn and Christine. We also saw Koala art as a similar project to the Buffalo arts project in Singapore. At the coast, we found statues and a magnificent surf. The surf clubs where good hangouts for sketch drops. We saw art at galleries, museums, street art and public art. I found one of my favorite artists at a cafe in Brisbane, another at a gallery in Mount Tamborine. I also joined a life drawing class in Mount Tamborine with local artists. Great fun and an excellent model. In Towoomba we explored the alleys with street art and cafées. A tour that I would suggest to anyone visiting the city. Every road comes to and end and the art road trip Australia is finished for this trip, but I hope and plan for a new one. Thank you to everyone that we meet that brightened our day, and thankful to have experienced an exhibition, workshops, classes, artist meetings, galleries, art museums, sketching and so much more. Now it is time to start to work on the exhibition at Volvo Artloft, Singapore.

  • The power of the negative space

In art school I spent many hours trying to draw the “not” chair the “not” table. I did not quite grasp why. Later in life it all comes down to composition or layout if you like. The Asian artists to me are the greatest experts in this field. For them it is completely natural, to draw the not chair. A tip would be to grab a pen and paper and sit down and force your eyes to actually look at the air. Look at the space in between while sketching. It is an interesting journey. Kind of like art meditation! #harmony #balance #ArtworkshopinSingapore #Artclass #negativespace #arttip #artbyIngelaJohansson #artschool

  • Beishan The artist village

Have you ever been to a musem and been the only visitor? I have a small number of times in my life once in Therean, and once in Beishan the artist village. It is a house form the Qing Dynasty that has been restored in to an art gallery and workshop by the local painter Zhang Tua Sheng. It is one of the most beautiful buidlings that I have seen, it is hard to belive that it once was a home to a family. It is vaste with many different buildings. I was fortunate to have a great translator and a help from my driver that turned out to be a fellow artist in calligraphy. As you can see on the pictures from the tea room and the calligraphy room I have no clue to what I am up to, but I am enjoying life! After painting we had roasted buckwheat tea under a tree that was over 600 years old. I am so glad that we found this artists sanctuary. They have workshops in Chinese. The venue has been used as a movie set and it is not hard to see why. • Coffee and ink

Talented Inger has done this quick sketch with coffee and ink. I just love the contrast between the soft coffee and strong ink. How you can create thin deep black lines with the ink and compare it with the mild sepia tones of coffee. I can hardly wait to try. The medium used was Nescafe Gold and Chinese ink. Perfect for sketching at a café. I can see a sketchbook about urban Singapore in this style. I hope that Inger will excuse me for using her lovely picture I just couldn’t resist it. This medium was tried out at faces and people expression painting class. #ArtclassinSingapore #Sketching #Coffee #ArtcourseinSingapore #Chineseink #illustration #talentedstudent #arts #Artclass #sepiatones

  • The concept of Taksu

In Bali there is a concept in art referred to as Taksu it refers to a painting done by intuition and an open heart. I think that this is something we as artists all strive for, and it is something that sometimes is in the brush on a good painting day. Maybe it has something to do with how you are in line within. This is one of my Taksu paintings. On the Art trip to Bali we will learn more about Taksu from a talented Balinese artist called Ni Nyoman Sani. #ArtclassinSingapore #Taksu #Baliarttrip #transportation #ArtcourseinSingapore #illustration #arts

  • Buying art material, part one drawing

I have realized that quite a few feel overwhelmed when they come to the art store. How do you know which paper or brand to buy? I can get that feeling, but I do admit that I love to take my time and once in a while dare to try new things. This is a few tips that I hope will make it slightly easier if you are just starting. I am starting with the basic material for drawing. Drawing material The 2 basic pencils that you need are HB and 6B. Get a steel sharpener, and a good eraser. For sketching get cheaper paper, as the more you sketch the better you become. If you are opting for a sketch pad, chose one that you can easily carry with you. Copy paper is also great for sketching. Chose a pad called drawing paper if you like to work with shadows and different tones in your pieces.  The drawing paper is thicker and can take more work with shadowing. You an also but a black ink Micron pen that is waterproof and a good tool for sketching. The next step can be to get a few colored pencils and a paper stump to create the shadows with, if you don’t like to use your fingers. Another tip is to have a clean sheet of paper under your hand if you are working with a lot of shadows, so that the hand want smudge your drawing. #Sketching #chosingcolours #eraser #pencil #artmaterial #Art #paper #acrylic #drawing #chosingbrushes
